Description

Exceptionally beautiful and superbly manufactured this cast satin finish pint tankard with a glass bottom is made by Crown & Rose and is delivered in a fitted wooden case.
Known as the Eton this particular tankard has been known by many names over that past 300 years or so including the Sussex and more recently "the King's Shilling'. There are a few theory’s about the origins of this 18th century tankard but the most likely relates to when the acceptance of ‘the Kings Shilling’ was a means of conscript into the British Army or Royal Navy. Recruiters would trawl the inns and public houses around the docks secretively dropping the Shilling into the worthy and unsuspecting candidates ale. If the drink was finished and the coin was found this would mean a new career for the innocent customer!
The glass bottom was added to the base of the ale tankard in order that the potential recruit could check to make sure the coin hadn’t been dropped inside before the drink was consumed.

An exceptional piece of a substantial 690 grams this is one of the finest tankards produced today.
